Philippines Junior Tamaraws V Syria Juniors

Syria Rugby League Juniors dominated the match against the Junior Tamaraws on the 12th November at the United Cup tournament. At the Terry Lamb Complex in Chester Hill, Sydney, Australia.

Syria’s dominance was on show in the first half with 3 unanswered tries. Before a final attacking play by the Philippines close to the end of the first half with the final pass in the back line taken by Ken Pena. Who wrestled and muscled through 3 Syrian defenders to score the Philippines first try, bringing to end the first half with a Syria 18-4 lead.

The second half started as the first with Syria scoring another 3 tries. Half way through the second half the Philippines found themselves in the Syria quarter through a penalty. With the Junior Tamarws close to the line. A pass found a barging Liam Byrnes smash through the Syrian defence and score adjacent to the post and converted by Vice Captain Mitchell Connors for a 32-10 score line.

Unfortunately from the kick off the Philippines drop the ball and give Syria the field position to score their final converted try of the game.

The Philippines finished strongly with a carbon copy play to their second try. With Liam Byrnes again taking a final pass and barging through Syrian defence to score the Philippines third try converted by Daniel Bacabis. The game ended with a final score of 38-16 to the Syria Juniors.

Philippines Junior Coach Tim Cheong was proud of his team. Especially performances from Winger Ken Pena, who did not just score the Philippines first try. But was courageous in defence and on several occasions ran the ball strongly for the team. Hooker Daniel Bacabis was one of the best of the Philippines forwards, also taking on the Syria in the front lines. Best for the Philippines was Liam Byrnes. You rarely see a Prop score in a Rugby league match and he scored two. As well as having a strong defensive and attacking game.
