Wigan-Leigh College to Feature in Jamaica’s New Year 9s

February 15, 2024, KINGSTON, Jamaica: Rugby League Jamaica (RLJ) is set to host its 4th annual New Year 9’s Tournament on Saturday, February 17, at the Mona Bowl in Kingston. Twenty teams will vie for victory across various categories, including Men’s, Women’s, High School U19, and Academy U19. Adding an international flair to the competition, the U19 Academy division will feature guest team Wigan-Leigh College from the United Kingdom. Games begin at 10am.

In the Men’s division, teams are divided into two groups, with the top team from each group advancing to the Championship match. Group A has defending champions West Kingston Hyenas, St Bess Sledgehammers, Duhaney Park Red Sharks, and Spanish Town Old Boys. Group B features Washington Blvd. Bulls, Liguanea Dragons, Jamaica Defence Force, and St. Catherine OB Thundercats.

In the Women’s category, Red Sharks, Bulls-Titans, and Sledgehammers will compete for top honors. Meanwhile, in the Boys’ High School U19 division, Cedar Grove Academy, Kingston High, and BB Coke will do battle. The Club Academy segment features Thundercats, Jamaica Hurricanes B, and Wigan-Leigh College in Group A, while Jamaica Hurricanes A, Sledgehammers, and Bulls will contest Group B. The top two teams from each group will clash in the championship game.

Director of Rugby, Romeo Monteith, expressed excitement for the upcoming event, stating, “Our playing community truly enjoys 9’s festivals, and we are delighted to fulfill our commitment once again to organizing tournaments that keep our athletes active and sharp. In addition, we’re excited to welcome Wigan-Leigh College on a development tour, providing a valuable learning experience for our own Academy Teams and elevating the competitive spirit of the tournament.”
