Manila rains damped the pitch in perfect preparation for the inaugural PNRL Province vs City on Sunday 3rd of November. Both teams arrived early, in good spirits and with a keen focus on comradery, commitment, and showing off how far they had taken rugby league in the Philippines.
Kick off was 3.15 pm and the clash of the big men around the center was immediate. Some huge runs were cut down with some solid tackles as both teams tested each other’s defense and bravery.
Province found the gaps early and punished the City for not moving up early in defense. City came back hard, but some unforced errors meant gains were turned over and Province took every advantage.
It looked for a while that the scores were going all Province’s way despite a solid try on the corner by City. The Province team continued to score with some superb breaks and quick hands. They further increased the margin with four conversions. A little bruised and battered City ended the half with one try and a confident Province team ready to pile on some more pain.
City started in similar fashion, with moments of brilliance followed by unforced errors and some unlucky breaks. Province was strong and used their center players to continue to pound the defense.
Then as the skies cleared, City errors cleared too playing a much better second half, passes were completed, gaps opened up and the sun began to shine. The frustration was put aside, and the tries began to happen.
The score narrowed, and conversions would have helped, but Province held them out long enough to hold the title and a well-deserved victory.
