Norwegian national rugby league team The Vikings play friendly

On Saturday 19th September the Norwegian national team "The Vikings" played a friendly match against a Barbarians side made up of players from big rugby playing nations like Australia, NZ, South Africa and the UK. The Norwegians second stance on home soil was a big success with the home side recording a whopping 76-16 win over the Barbarians.

Next year Norway plan to start a 4 team domestic season which will have 3 Rugby Union Clubs who have shown expressed interest in playing League matches in 2010. Along with the 3 Union clubs a brand new club has been formed.

Gateshead Thunder prop forward Chris Parker has been named in the train-on squad for Malta's upcoming home international against touring English amateur club, Bamber Bridge.

The 27-year-old forward, a Gateshead Storm junior, was the Thunder's most improved player in 2008.

The final qualifiers for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup finished up in November. Australia, New Zealand, England, France and Papua New Guinea automatically qualified. The remaining five spots have seen 14 teams compete in the qualifying rounds over the last 2 years. The end result will see arguably the best 10 rugby league nations in the World battle it out in next years World Cup.

International Rugby League 10 year Schedule

In a very positive move for international rugby league Richard Lewis the Deputy Chairman of the Rugby League International Federation has tabled a ten year plan. According to the RFL website the New Zealand Chairman Andrew Chalmers has already agreed to the schedule and the plan will be put forward to the Australian Rugby League in November.

For the first time in a long time international rugby league seems to have some direction. Richard Lewis should be commended for the 10 year plan. The NRL and Super League have both had record crowds and sponsorship over the last few years. The game at club level has never been in better shape. It is now the time to put some effort into international rugby league and assist other nations outside the big three.
